COURSE PURPOSE

The purpose of this course is to teach the students the meaning, the purpose, the value, and the method of expository preaching.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course will be divided into six (seven if needed) individual classes. A schedule is included below. Along with reading, students will also work through the process of developing an expository sermon. Students will also be required to give a short, in-class exposition of a passage assigned by the professor at the end of the course.

 REQUIRED TEXTS (Provided by Effects of Grace Ministries)

  1. The students will be required to read Bryan Chapell, Christ-Centered Preaching: Redeeming the Expository Sermon, Baker Books.
  2. Students will also be required to read the chapter entitled “Expositional Preaching” from the book Nine Marks of a Healthy Church, Crossway.
  3. Students will also need a Bible and some method for taking notes.

  • Session 1 – A Definition and Brief History of Preaching
  • Session 2 – Why Expository Preaching? & Understanding The Text
  • Session 3 – Developing an Expositional Sermon: Structural Analysis
  • Session 4 – Developing an Expositional Sermon: Engaging the Audience
  • Session 5 – In Class Presentations and Evaluations
  • Session 6 – In Class Presentations and Evaluations
  • Session 7* – In Class Presentations and Evaluations (if needed)
